It’s important to ask questions! Below are answers to some of the questions frequently asked about Commencement.
What time should graduates arrive?
Graduates should check in at the Sports and Recreation Center at 9 a.m.
What time should guests arrive?
The tent will open at 9 a.m. and the ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. Guests will not be allowed to enter during the processional.
What happens if it rains?
We plan to hold the event outside, rain or shine. While the event will be in a tent, May weather in northern Illinois can be unpredictable. Please watch the local weather forecast and dress accordingly. If severe weather impacts our event, notifications will be posted on our website.
Footwear
Since the event is outside on a grass field, shoes with flat soles are highly encouraged for both graduates and guests.
What can be worn to adorn my robe?
Special cords, stoles, serapes and pins for College-recognized national academic honor societies or registered student organizations are permitted to be worn during the Commencement ceremony. These items are not distributed at Cap and Gown Pick-Up. Please check with the organization. These are the only items that can be worn with your cap and gown during the ceremony.
Mortar boards can be decorated. College policy on appropriate messaging applies.
How will I get my cap and gown?
A cap and gown pick-up event will be held on April 15 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the lower level of the Mohr Student Center.
Balloons and Signs
Items such as balloons and signs that could interfere with the view of other guests are prohibited. Please review the list of prohibited items.
What is the deadline to move out of the residence halls?
Graduates will need to be moved out of their residence halls by noon on Sunday, May 11 (earlier if you live in Nollen). Check with your RD for details.
Who can I contact with questions?
Please contact Assistant Dean of the Faculty Fran Pease at pease@lakeforest.edu.
